Capsicum annuum

  • Compact and upright pepper plant, ideal for pots and small spaces
  • Decorative tricolor fruits: cream, yellow, orange, and red all on the same plant
  • Heat varies by color: red (mild), yellow (spicy), orange (hot)
  • Plant size about 20–25 cm (8–10″) tall and wide
  • Grows well in small pots (12–15 cm / 5–6″)
  • Harvest ready in about 10–14 weeks
  • Perfect for balconies, patios, or indoor decoration

- Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before the last expected frost.

- How: Sow 1 seed per cell in plug trays (1.5–3 cm).

- Soil: Use a light, well-draining seed mix (pH 5.8–6.5, EC ~1.5). Cover with a thin 2–3 mm layer of vermiculite or light soil.

- Temperature: Maintain 23–25 °C (73–77 °F) until germination. Keep high humidity and no light required at this stage.

- Germination Time: 4–6 days.

- After Germination: Lower humidity to around 70% to avoid stem stretching.

THIN

- Sow one seed per cell. If two emerge, snip weaker seedlings at soil level.

PLANT OUT

- Transplant after 21–28 days, once seedlings have a strong root ball and short internodes.

- Plant into 9–15 cm pots (optimal: 12 cm / 4–5”).

- Outdoors: use containers with good drainage; 3 plants fit well in an 8” container.

EXPOSURE

- Prefers full sun or bright indoor light.

- Can tolerate lower light than many peppers—suitable for windowsills, balconies, or patios.

TEMPERATURE

- Ideal: 21–25 °C (70–77 °F).

- Minimum: 16 °C (61 °F).

- Maximum: 35 °C (95 °F) – higher temperatures speed growth but may cause stretching.

- Avoid frost (<5 °C / 40 °F will damage plants).

SUPPORT

- Place 2 small sticks beside the central stem if fruits cause the plant to lean.

PRUNING

- No pruning required. Compact, upright growth habit.

WATER

- Keep soil consistently moist, never waterlogged.

- Avoid letting the soil dry completely; peppers stop growing under drought stress.

FEED

- Fertilize with a balanced formula (e.g., NPK 15-10-15 + micros) at ~2.5 EC with each watering.

- As plants mature, a slightly higher EC (up to 4–5) encourages fruiting and reduces stretching.

- Signs of low nutrients: yellowing leaves when fruits are ripening.

PROTECT

- Encourage pollination (bees, bumblebees, or hand-shaking flowers) for bigger fruits.

- Protect from temperatures below 10 °C and from frost.

- Strengthen plants by occasional foliar sprays with magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts) or potassium solutions.

- Ensure good air circulation indoors to prevent fungal issues.

- First fruits appear around 70–85 days from transplanting (10–12 weeks).

- Fruits ripen successively, changing from cream → yellow → orange → red.

- Flavor & Heat:

Red – mild (≈2,500 Scoville)

Yellow – spicy (≈25,000 Scoville)

Orange – hot (≈40,000 Scoville)

- Harvest regularly to encourage continuous fruiting.

- Fruits weigh 15–25 g each, perfect for snacking or ornamental use.
