Capsicum annuum

  • Compact plants, only 25–35 cm tall
  • Perfect for pots, patios, balconies, or windowsills
  • Recommended pot size: 5–7″
  • Upright growth with peppers forming neatly along the stem
  • No pruning or pinching needed
  • Sweet, crunchy, and flavorful red peppers
  • Early maturing: ready in about 10–12 weeks
  • Heavy yields despite small size
  • Drought tolerant and low maintenance
  • Great for both indoor and outdoor growing

- Start indoors 8–10 weeks before the last frost.

- Plug size: 1 seed per plug (0.5–1.2″ / 1.5–3 cm).

- Soil: Fine sowing mix with good drainage, pH 5.8–6.5, EC ~1.5.

- Covering: Lightly cover with vermiculite or fine soil (2–3 mm).

- Temperature: 23–25 °C (73–77 °F), high humidity, no light required.

- Germination: 4–6 days.

- Seedling growth: 21–28 days at 21–23 °C (70–73 °F).

- Reduce humidity after germination to prevent stem stretching.

THIN

- Normally not required since only one seed is sown per plug.

PLANT OUT

- When: After seedlings are fully rooted and ~4–6 weeks old. A small flower bud may already be visible.

- Pot size: 5–7″ (12–18 cm), optimal 6″. One plug per pot.

- Outdoor option: 3 plants can be grouped in a 10″ container.

- Soil: Standard potting mix with good drainage and water retention. pH 5.8–6.5, EC ~2.5.

EXPOSURE

- Prefers full sun (indoors: bright location, south-facing window, or under grow lights).

- Day length >16 hours accelerates fruiting.

TEMPERATURE

- Ideal: 21–25 °C (70–77 °F).

- Night: 18 °C (64 °F).

- Avoid <16 °C (61 °F) or >35 °C (95 °F).

- Sensitive to frost.

SUPPORT

- Place 2 small sticks near the main stem to keep the plant stable as fruits develop.

PRUNING

- None required. Plant is naturally compact and upright.

WATER

- Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

- Best growth with nutrient solution EC ~2.5.

FEED

- Medium fertilizer needs. Use a balanced NPK (15-10-15) with micronutrients.

- Low EC can cause yellowing leaves and reduced flavor.

- Adding magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) and potassium supplements helps improve leaf strength and fruit quality.

PROTECT

- Avoid exposure to frost and cold drafts.

- Bees or bumblebees enhance pollination and increase fruit size outdoors.

- Clay in soil (2–5%) helps stabilize nutrients and reduces stem stretching.

- Time to maturity: 70–85 days from transplanting (~10–12 weeks from planting).

- Fruit: Sweet red peppers, 23–35 g each.

- Yield: Continuous harvest — the plant keeps producing new fruits as ripe ones are picked.

- Tip: Harvest regularly to encourage ongoing fruit set.
