- Sow indoors 5–7 weeks before transplanting, or directly into pots/containers.

- Germination: 3 days (max 2 nights) at 18 °C (64 °F), high humidity, no light required.

- Soil: Well-drained seedling mix, pH 5.8–6.5, EC ~1.5. Cover lightly with 4–8 mm vermiculite or fine soil.

- Fertilization (seedlings): Low nitrogen, ~1.5 EC with each watering.

Thin

- Thin seedlings to one strong plant per plug/pot to avoid competition.

Plant Out

- Transplant when seedlings have 2 large true leaves and roots fill the plug.

- Spacing outdoors: 50 cm x 50 cm (20″ x 20″).

- Containers: 15–20 cm (6″–8″) pots, one plant per pot. Smaller pots (9–12 cm / 4–5″) possible for young patio plants.

Exposure

- Full sun is best for growth and color development.

- Plants grown in cooler nights show stronger purple coloration.

Temperature

- Ideal: 18–24 °C (64–75 °F).

- Optimal day/night: 20 °C / 14 °C (68 °F / 57 °F).

- Warmer nights enhance violet stem color.

- Minimum: 8 °C (46 °F); growth slows if cooler.

- Frost: Not frost tolerant – protect from night frosts.

Support

- Generally not needed; compact, sturdy growth.

Pruning

- Optional pinching 4–5 weeks after planting can delay harvest by a week but increases side-shoot production (more, smaller curds with taller stems).

Water

- Keep soil consistently moist, never allow wilting.

- Water with minimum EC 1.5.

Feed

- Balanced fertilization required.

- High feeding: Larger plants with broader foliage.

- Low feeding: Smaller plants with reduced diameter.

Protect

- Monitor for pests: cabbage fly, swede midge, aphids, rabbits, butterfly eggs.

- Preventive protection recommended in juvenile stage.

- Central head: Ready in ~7 weeks after planting.

- Side shoots: First flush: ~8 weeks. Second flush: ~10 weeks.

- Up to 50% of yield comes from side shoots – harvest regularly to encourage continuous sprouting.

- Yield: 0.5–1.5 kg per plant depending on harvest method and growing conditions.

- Culinary use: Sweet, tender purple stems hold color even after cooking. Delicious steamed, roasted, or fresh in salads and stir-fries.
