Pisum sativum

  • Compact shelling pea variety
  • About 69 days to maturity
  • Plants grow to ~18" (46 cm) tall
  • Forms a neat, uniform hedge
  • Produces abundant white blossoms
  • Suitable for 8–10″ pots, containers, or raised beds
  • Great choice for small gardens and patios
  • Tolerant to Fusarium Wilt Race 1, Downy Mildew, and Ascochyta.

- Sow from early spring once soil can be worked and frost danger has passed.

- Direct sowing in final pots, raised beds, or garden soil is best.

- You can also start in plugs and transplant after 5–7 days, once 2 true leaves appear.

- Depth: Cover lightly with 4–8 mm of fine soil.

- Spacing: Sow 5–6 seeds in an 8–10″ (20–25 cm) pot; outdoors, 5 cm (2″) apart in the row, 25–50 cm (10–20″) between rows.

- Soil: Well-drained, with good water retention. EC 1.5, pH 5.8–6.5.

- Germination: ~3 days at 10–20 °C (50–68 °F), in darkness and high humidity.

THIN

- Thin only if overcrowded. The afila vine type benefits from tight spacing so vines cling together for support.

PLANT OUT

- If starting indoors, transplant young plants (2 leaves stage) after 5–7 days. Prefer direct sowing in final position.

EXPOSURE

- Full sun for maximum yield and sweetness.

- Can tolerate light shade but pod set will be reduced.

TEMPERATURE

- Ideal: 15–20 °C (59–68 °F).

- Minimum: 10 °C (50 °F). Growth slows below this.

- Not frost-resistant — protect from night frost.

SUPPORT

- No trellis needed. Afila vines cling together naturally, forming a neat hedge.

PRUNING

- Not required. Plants have compact architecture (~45 cm / 18″ tall).

WATER

- Keep soil consistently moist, never let plants wilt.

- Water with low EC (0.5) during young plant stage.

FEED

- Light feeders; avoid excess nitrogen (causes leafy growth at expense of pods).

- Balanced fertilizer at sowing and once mid-season is sufficient.

PROTECT

- Disease resistance: Bernard is tolerant to Fusarium Wilt Race 1, Downy Mildew, and Ascochyta.

- Watch for: Powdery mildew late in crop, and aphids.

- Remove overripe pods to prevent strain and mildew buildup.

- Maturity: 65–70 days after transplanting (approx. 7 weeks from sowing under normal conditions).

- Pods: Small uniform pods, 2–2.5″ long, 1–2 pods per node.

- Method: Pick regularly to encourage continued pod set.

- Use: Shelling peas for fresh eating or cooking. Quick cooking (7–9 minutes). Rich in protein, fiber, and vitamins.
