Solanum lycopersicum

  • Trailing growth, perfect for pots, balconies, and hanging baskets
  • Compact plants reaching 25–30 cm (10–12″) in height
  • High yielding, produces plenty of cocktail tomatoes
  • Fruit size about 25–50 g (0.9–1.7 oz) each
  • Sweet flavor with a brix level around 8
  • Early maturing, harvest in 10–12 weeks from transplant
  • Continuous production, fruits ripen steadily through the season
  • Low maintenance, no pruning needed and easy to grow

- Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost.

- How to sow: Sow in trays or plug cells using a light, well-draining seed-starting mix.

- Depth: Cover seeds lightly with 2–3 mm of fine soil or vermiculite.

- Temperature: Maintain 18–21 °C (64–70 °F) for germination. Seeds typically sprout in 1–2 days.

- Light: Germination does not require light, but provide strong light once seedlings emerge to avoid stretching.

THIN

- Thin to one strong seedling per plug if multiple seeds were sown.

- Ideal transplant plugs should have short internodes and well-developed roots.

PLANT OUT

- Timing: Transplant when seedlings are 14–21 days old and well rooted, after risk of frost has passed.

- Containers: Use 20 cm (8”) or larger pots, or hanging baskets (25–35 cm / 10–14”).

- Spacing:

* Pots indoors: 30 × 30 cm (12 × 12”), about 10 plants/m².

* Hanging baskets: 40 × 40 cm (16 × 16”), about 5–6 plants/m².

* Outdoors in soil: 25 × 25 cm (10 × 10”).

EXPOSURE

- Place in a sunny location with at least 6–8 hours of direct light daily.

- Indoors, use supplemental grow lights if natural sunlight is insufficient.

TEMPERATURE

- Ideal range: Day 21–25 °C (70–77 °F), night 16–18 °C (60–65 °F).

- Avoid night temperatures below 13 °C (55 °F), which impair pollination.

- High heat above 27 °C (80 °F) may reduce fruit set; maintain airflow.

SUPPORT

- Plants have a trailing habit and generally do not require staking.

- Hanging baskets or pots allow the stems to cascade naturally.

PRUNING

- No pruning is required.

- Optional: Pinching above the 3rd leaf encourages more branching but may delay fruiting by about 10 days.

WATER

- Keep soil evenly moist; avoid cycles of drying and flooding.

- Use well-draining potting mix with water-holding capacity.

- EC 2.5–3.5 recommended for container production.

FEED

- Tomatoes are heavy feeders. Start with balanced fertilizer (15-10-15 NPK with micronutrients).

- Increase potassium and phosphorus as flowers appear for improved taste and fruit quality.

- Maintain pH 5.8–6.5.

PROTECT

- Avoid frost exposure at all stages.

- Encourage pollination with good airflow; bees or gentle shaking of plants support fruit set.

- Monitor for common pests (aphids, whiteflies) and diseases.

- Prevent stretching by lowering humidity after germination and ensuring strong light.

- Sprays of magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts) can strengthen foliage.

- Time to maturity: 70–85 days from transplant (about 10–12 weeks).

- Fruit size: 25–50 g (0.9–1.7 oz) per tomato.

- Harvest: Pick fruits when they reach full color (red, yellow, or orange depending on variety).

- Yield: Plants produce continuously throughout summer, right up to the end of the season.

- Storage: Store harvested fruits at room temperature; avoid refrigeration to maintain flavor.
