Capsicum annuum

  • Compact, ornamental pepper variety – ideal for pots and small spaces

  • Perfect for 5–6 in pots (12–15 cm)
  • Produces unique mini pumpkin-shaped fruits
  • Ripens from glossy purple-black to a bright golden yellow
  • Sweet, crunchy flavor – delicious fresh or cooked
  • Both decorative and edible – a real showpiece for gardens, patios
  • Easy to grow with full sun, rich soil, and regular watering

- Start indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost.

- Sow one seed per cell (plug size 1–3 cm).

- Cover lightly with 2–3 mm vermiculite or fine soil.

- Keep soil pH 5.8–6.5 and EC ~1.5.

- Germination: Temperature: 23–25 °C (73–77 °F). Time: 4–6 days

- Maintain high humidity until 70% germination, then reduce to prevent stretching.

- Seedling growth: 21–28 days at 21–23 °C (70–73 °F).

THIN

- Sow one seed per cell; no thinning usually required. If extras sprout, keep the strongest seedling.

PLANT OUT

- Transplant when seedlings are well-rooted with short internodes (small flower may already be visible).

- Pot size: Best in 12–15 cm (5–6″) pots; can also be grown in 7″ pots or containers 25–30 cm wide.

- Spacing: Indoors, ~25 cm (10″) apart. Outdoors, 3 plants in a 25–30 cm (10–12″) container.

EXPOSURE

- Requires full sun; at least 6–8 hours of direct light.

- Long days (>16 hrs) and high light encourage early fruiting.

TEMPERATURE

- Ideal: 21–25 °C (70–77 °F).

- Minimum: 16 °C (61 °F).

- Night: 18 °C (64 °F).

- Sensitive to frost; temperatures below 5 °C (40 °F) will cause damage.

SUPPORT

- Generally compact and upright, but 2 small stakes around the central stem help balance the plant once fruits develop.

PRUNING

- No pruning or pinching required. Naturally compact and branching.

WATER

- Keep soil evenly moist; avoid drying out.

- Consistent watering maintains continuous fruit set.

- Recommended irrigation EC: ~2.5.

FEED

- Medium fertilizer need.

- Use a balanced NPK (15-10-15 with micros) in plugs.

- Continue feeding with balanced fertilizer throughout the season.

- If leaves yellow during fruit ripening, increase EC slightly to improve taste and color.

- Adding 2–5% clay to soil can stabilize fertility and reduce stretch.

PROTECT

- Protect from frost and prolonged cold.

- Good ventilation reduces humidity and fungal risks.

- Bees and bumblebees improve pollination and fruit size.

- Strengthen leaves with occasional MgSO₄ (Epsom salt) or potassium-based sprays if needed.

- Time to maturity: 12–14 weeks after planting (85–100 days from transplant).

- Ripening: Fruits start glossy purple-black, then turn golden-orange.

- Fruit size: 25–50 g each, shaped like tiny pumpkins.

- First ripe fruits appear near the central stem.

- Harvest regularly to encourage continuous fruiting throughout the season.

- Use: Both decorative and edible – sweet, crunchy taste ideal for fresh eating, salads, or cooking.
