Cucumis melo

  • Compact, vigorous plant ideal for pots, balconies, or garden beds
  • Early maturity: about 18 weeks from transplant to harvest
  • Heavy yields: 10–20 fruits per plant
  • Small, round melons with ultra-thin, easy-to-peel skin
  • Sweet, aromatic flavor with smooth texture
  • Skin turns from green to honey-yellow when ripe
  • Tolerant to common melon diseases like powdery mildew
  • Attracts bees and bumblebees for good pollination
  • Strong germination and fast early growth
  • Plant spacing: ~25 × 25 cm or 2 plants in a 30 cm pot

- Start seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before the last expected frost.

- Sow one seed per plug or small pot (3–5 cm, 1.5–2″).

- Cover lightly with fine soil or vermiculite (2–3 mm).

- Maintain high humidity and cover until germination.

- Germination conditions: 23–25 °C (73–76 °F), no light required. Seeds typically sprout in 2–4 days.

- Soil: Use a well-drained sowing mix with EC 1.5 and pH 5.8–6.5.

- Early fertilization: Water seedlings with a mild solution (EC 0.5) of balanced NPK (15-10-15) plus trace elements.

THIN:

If multiple seeds sprout in a cell, snip extras at soil level, keeping the strongest seedling.

PLANT OUT:

- Timing: Transplant when seedlings have 1–2 true leaves and are well-rooted (8–14 days after sowing).

- Spacing: Indoors: 25 × 25 cm (10 × 10″). Containers: 2 plants per 30 cm (12″) pot.

- Soil: Fertile, well-drained, but moisture-retentive. Add 2–5% clay if available to stabilize nutrition and prevent excessive stretching.

EXPOSURE:

- Needs full sun (minimum 6–8 hours daily).

- Long summer days with strong light encourage earlier flowering.

TEMPERATURE:

- Ideal: 21–25 °C (70–77 °F) daytime, 18–20 °C (64–68 °F) nighttime.

- Critical: Growth is slowed below 15 °C (59 °F) and plants are highly frost-sensitive.

SUPPORT:

- Provide small stakes or strings; wind stems as they grow.

- Use 2–3 sticks around the central stem to balance fruit weight.

PRUNING:

- Do not remove side shoots – female flowers form there.

- Main stem carries male flowers; side shoots carry female (fruiting) flowers.

WATER:

- Keep soil evenly moist; avoid drying out.

- Water more frequently as fruits develop.

- Use moderate feeding solutions at EC 1–1.5.

FEED:

- Medium fertilizer demand.

- Too much nitrogen = large leaves but weaker fruit flavor.

- Balanced NPK with magnesium and potassium is best.

- Foliar sprays of magnesium sulphate (Epsom salt) or potassium sulphite can improve leaf color and strength.

PROTECT:

- Pollination: Bees and bumblebees greatly improve fruit set and fruit size.

- Disease: Tolerant to mildew, but not fully resistant. Good airflow and dry leaves help prevent problems.

- Frost: Never expose to frost – use fleece or cloches if nights are cool.

- Fruits ripen about 70–80 days after transplanting (varies by climate).

- Signs of ripeness: Skin changes from green to yellow. Fruit softens slightly and develops strong aroma.

- Size: 100–150 g per melon, with 10–20 fruits per plant.

- Harvest method: Cut fruits gently from the stem; avoid pulling to prevent vine damage.
