Phaseolus vulgaris

  • Early to mid-season maturity.
  • Golden-yellow climbing bean variety with long, tender stringless pods.
  • Pod length: ~20–25 cm, smooth and uniform.
  • Excellent flavor with a sweet, buttery taste and crisp texture.
  • High-yielding vines — ideal for trellises, poles, and vertical garden setups.
  • Great for fresh eating, steaming, sautéing, pickling, and freezing.
  • Open-pollinated seeds.
  • Natural, untreated, non-GMO seeds.

When to start:

  • Direct sow outdoors after all risk of frost has passed and soil is warm (≥ 15°C / 60°F).
  • In cool climates, sow late May to early June.

How to sow:

  • Sow seeds 2–3 cm (1") deep.
  • Place seeds 10–15 cm (4–6") apart in rows or around a support structure.
  • Space rows 60–90 cm (24–36") apart if row planting.
  • If planting at a teepee or trellis, plant 4–6 seeds per pole.
  • Keep soil moist until germination (7–12 days).

Tip: Do not start climbing beans indoors; they dislike transplanting and perform best direct-sown.

A. THIN

  • Thin to one plant per spot if multiple seeds were sown together.

B. PLANT OUT

  • Only applies if you pre-sprouted seeds: transplant very gently once true leaves appear, disturbing roots as little as possible.

C. EXPOSURE

  • Full sun: 6–8+ hours/day.

D. TEMPERATURE

  • Optimal growth: 18–28°C (65–82°F).
  • Avoid sowing in cold, wet soil—beans may rot.

E. SUPPORT

Provide sturdy support 2–2.5 m (6–8 ft) tall:

  • Bamboo teepees
  • Vertical trellis or netting
  • Poles or string trained upward

Train vines by gently wrapping around supports.

F. PRUNING

  • Not required.
  • Remove damaged or diseased leaves if needed.
  • Pinch tips only if plants outgrow supports.

G. WATER

  • Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  • Water deeply 1–2 times/week, more in heat.
  • Avoid overhead watering to reduce disease—water at base.

H. FEED

  • Beans fix their own nitrogen — avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers.
  • Before planting, amend soil with compost.
  • Side-dress with balanced organic fertilizer once at flowering if needed.

I. PROTECT

Common issues:

  • Slugs/snails at early stages → hand pick, traps, barriers
  • Aphids → prune infested tips, spray with water or insecticidal soap
  • Bean beetles → pick by hand, use row covers early season
  • Powdery mildew → improve air flow, avoid wetting foliage

Mulch to retain soil moisture and reduce weeds.

When to harvest:

  • Begin when pods are full length but still tender—typically 60–75 days after sowing depending on variety.
  • Pick every 2–3 days to encourage continuous production.
  • Avoid letting pods mature and bulge heavily — this slows new pod formation.

How to harvest:

  • Use two hands to avoid damaging vines; pinch or cut pods off.

For dry beans, allow pods to turn tan/brown and dry on the plant before harvesting.

🌟 Success Tips

  • Rotate bean beds yearly—avoid planting where beans & peas grew last year.
  • Beans appreciate warm soil, steady water, good air flow, and strong support.
  • Frequent picking = heavy yields.
