Allium sp.

  • Tall, elegant stems reaching about 70–80 cm (28–30″).
  • Produces attractive round flower globes, about 5 cm (2″) wide, filled with purple star-shaped blooms.
  • Days to maturity: about 18–20 days from sowing to first blooms.
  • Long flowering period from June to September, providing continuous summer color.
  • Ideal for borders, containers, and ornamental displays.
  • Excellent cut flower with a vase life of up to three weeks.
  • Edible leaves with a mild onion-garlic flavor, perfect for garnishing salads and dishes.
  • Contains natural antioxidants and vitamins, offering culinary and health benefits.
  • Highly pollinator-friendly, attracting bees and beneficial insects to the garden.

- Start indoors in early spring or late summer.

- Allium Quattro requires a cold period to initiate flowering, so winter chill helps trigger strong bloom.

- Use a fine, well-drained seed mix (EC 1.5, pH 5.8–6.5).

- Sow 2–3 seeds per plug (2–5 cm) or 4–5 seeds for larger plugs (5–8 cm).

- Cover lightly with 2–3 mm vermiculite or open-structured soil.

- Germination: 7–10 days at 16–18°C (60–64°F), high humidity, no light required.

THIN

- Not generally needed; sowing multiple seeds per plug produces fuller plants.

PLANT OUT

- Transplanting: Once plugs are fully rooted (small rootstock visible, 2–5 cm shoots), transplant into pots (9–15 cm / 3.5–6″) or directly outdoors at 20 × 20 cm spacing.

- Pot size: 9–15 cm for compact growth; suitable for containers and patio pots.

EXPOSURE

- Full sun to partial shade. Bright conditions encourage stronger leaves and flower stalks.

TEMPERATURE

- Ideal range: 18–25°C (46–77°F).

- Tolerates 5–35°C (40–95°F) but growth slows under extremes.

- Frost hardy down to –25°C (zone 5), especially if covered by snow or fleece.

SUPPORT

- Sturdy stems typically do not need support, but in windy spots staking may help protect flower heads.

PRUNING

- Mow back leaves after 4–5 months to stimulate new sprout production.

- Remove spent flowers if not collected for seed to prolong vegetative growth.

WATER

- Keep soil consistently moist but well-drained.

- Avoid waterlogging; ensure pots and beds have proper drainage.

FEED

- Apply balanced fertilizer (e.g. NPK 15-10-15 + micros) at EC 1.5 with watering.

- Regular feeding supports continuous leaf regrowth and strong flowers.

PROTECT

- Monitor for root aphids (cause stunted growth). Treat promptly at the plant center.

- Rust spots may appear late in the season under stress. Remove affected leaves.

- Plants recover well from both drought and overwatering if corrected.

  • Leaves:

    • Ready 8–10 weeks after transplanting when roots are established.

    • Harvest soft, tender leaves for fresh onion-garlic flavor in salads, stir-fries, and dishes.

    • Recovery after full harvest is about 6 weeks in optimal conditions.

  • Flowers:

    • Blooms appear June–September, lasting around 7 weeks.

    • Cut flowers (75–90 cm stems) last 12–18 days in a vase.

    • Both flowers and stems are edible at bud stage.

  • Storage:

    • Fresh leaves store 5–7 days in the fridge.

    • Cook time: 1 minute; stir-fry 1–2 minutes.
