  • Suitable for pots (15–17 cm) and open-field planting
  • High yields: harvest central head first, then side shoots for extended picking
  • Tasty fresh in salads, smoothies, or baked as kale chips
  • Rich in antioxidants and nutrients

- Sow indoors 5–7 weeks before transplanting outdoors. For fall crops, sow mid to late summer.

- Use a fine sowing mix with good drainage (EC 1.5, pH 5.8–6.5).

- Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep and cover lightly with vermiculite or fine soil (4–8 mm layer).

- Maintain high humidity and keep covered until germination.

- Germination in about 3 days at 18°C (64°F).

- No light required until emergence.

THIN

Once seedlings emerge, thin to one strong plant per cell or pot to prevent competition.

PLANT OUT

- Transplant when seedlings have 2 large true leaves and a strong root system.

- Spacing: 50 × 50 cm (20 × 20") in open field, or 1 plant per 15–20 cm (6–8") pot.

EXPOSURE

- Full sun for best growth and leaf coloration.

- Plants grown in cooler autumn nights develop intensely pink and purple centers.

TEMPERATURE

- Optimal day/night: 20°C / 14°C (68°F / 57°F).

- Tolerates down to 8°C (46°F), but growth slows.

- Limited resistance to frost: cover if temperatures fall below 0°C (32°F).

SUPPORT

- Compact, upright plants do not usually need staking or support.

PRUNING

- Not required. Growth is naturally upright and rounded.

WATER

- Keep soil evenly moist; do not allow plants to wilt.

- Water with solution around 1.5 EC.

FEED

- Use balanced fertilization (EC ~1.5).

- High nitrogen/fertilization: larger plant size, greener leaves.

- Low nitrogen/fertilization: smaller plants, more intense pink/purple color.

PROTECT

- Monitor for cabbage fly, swede midge, aphids, and butterfly eggs.

- Use insect netting or preventative organic controls where possible.

Timing:

- 8–12 weeks after planting, depending on season and conditions.

- 8 weeks → light crop

- 10 weeks → average crop

- 12 weeks → heavy crop

Method:

- First harvest the central head of kale leaves (largest yield).

- After central harvest, new side shoots continue to develop for smaller follow-up harvests (sufficient for 1–2 person meals).

Use:

- Mild, sweet flavor with no bitterness.

- Eat fresh in salads, smoothies, or cook into kale chips.

- Rich in antioxidants and nutrients.
