Capsicum annuum

  • Compact plant, great for pots and hanging baskets
  • Moderate heat (~5,000 Scoville)
  • Early harvest: 12–14 weeks
  • Keeps producing in cooler conditions
  • Attractive red fruits, 20–30 g each
  • Easy to grow, minimal care needed
  • Continuous fruiting with regular watering
  • Pollinator-friendly (bees, bumblebees)

- Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost.

- Medium: Use a well-draining seed-starting mix (pH 5.8–6.5, EC ~1.5).

- Depth: Cover lightly with vermiculite or fine soil (2–3 mm).

- Temperature: Maintain 23–25 °C (73–77 °F) with high humidity until germination.

- Light: Not required for germination; provide light after sprouting.

- Germination period: 4–6 days.

THIN

- Sow one seed per plug if possible. If multiple seedlings sprout, keep the strongest and snip extras.

PLANT OUT

- Timing: Transplant after 3–4 weeks, once plugs are well-rooted and sturdy.

- Pot size: 15–17 cm (6–7”) pots, or 3 plants per 30 cm (12”) hanging basket.

- Spacing: Indoors: 25 × 25 cm (10 × 10”), about 16 plants/m².

EXPOSURE

- Prefers full sun or high light conditions.

- Long days (>16 h) promote strong fruiting.

TEMPERATURE

- Ideal: 21–25 °C (70–77 °F) daytime; 18–20 °C (64–68 °F) nights.

- Minimum: 16–18 °C (61–65 °F).

- Maximum: 35 °C (95 °F), though too hot can cause stretching.

- Frost sensitive: Protect from any frost.

SUPPORT

- Use 2–3 small stakes around the main stem in pots or baskets to balance plants when fruit load increases.

PRUNING

- Not required.

- For fuller baskets, pinch above the 3rd–4th leaf early; this delays fruit set slightly but promotes branching.

WATER

- Keep soil evenly moist; never allow to dry completely.

- Regular watering at EC ~2.0–2.5 supports healthy growth.

FEED

- Medium fertilization requirement.

- Use balanced NPK (15-10-15) with micronutrients in early growth.

- Maintain EC around 2.5 once established.

- Deficiency signs: Yellowing leaves when fruits are ripening = too low fertilization.

PROTECT

- Resistant to moderate temperature swings, continues producing in cooler summers.

- Encourage natural pollinators (bees, bumblebees) for better fruit set and larger fruits.

- Foliar sprays with MgSO₄ (Epsom salt) or K₂SO₃ strengthen leaves and improve color.

- Adding 2–5% clay to potting mix stabilizes fertilization and reduces stretching.

- First harvest: 12–14 weeks from transplant; peppers turn from black to bright red.

- Fruit size: 20–30 g each (sometimes up to 40–60 g, depending on culture).

- Continuous production: New fruits appear near leaf nodes; regrowth after picking is quick.

- Use: Pick fully red peppers for best flavor and spice (approx. 5,000 Scoville).
